Fran Korten’s Courageous Response to Terror

In her article for Yes!, Fran Korten asks a couple of poignant questions:

As we approach the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I can’t help but wonder if we in the U.S. could have acted differently. Could we have responded with something other than fear, uber-patriotism, military invasions, and domestic crackdowns? Could we have responded with community, openness, and tolerance plus smart strategic moves that made us safer without feeding the cycle of death?

After 10 years of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in a War Against an Abstract Noun – Terror – the world is no less safe, we are spending more on the military than ever before, and 5% of the wealthiest people on the planet control about 80% of everything.  Of all of the possible responses to the 9/11 attacks, there are few that could have led to a less desirable result.

Agression, fear, repression, invasion, and secrecy fuel nothing but vengeance, anger, and violence.  We can choose to end the cycle or become bitter spokes in the wheel.

I’m for the roses.  Or, more to my personal taste, offering Birds of Paradise…
